So, I was trying to track down an image used in the beginning of a video on the creepiest kids' toys ever, which...disturbingly enough, didn't show up as an actual toy. No real wonder, really, because--well, it's pretty much nightmare fuel (seriously, click at your own risk, and depending on inclination, possibly NSFW).

So I turned to Google Image search, always my first recourse, no matter how often it disappoints me. It turned up Monty Python's rabbit as a hand puppet; a gallery on Imgur apparently uploaded by the creator behind the Fugglers; Nintendo World Report's review of something else I can't track down, which was sent to their office; Florentijn Hofman's half-melted, boneless somethings that lounge around in various places; Julia Bornefeld's...leg tangle??...sculpture; Funcage's entry on thirty-three fashion items, most of which are just baffling; PetaPixel's animals turned inside out; Matt Kirkland's investigation into what's really underneath those animatronic toys; and one of the archived Twisted Toys entries from the Sassy Two-Socks blog, in specific, this entry, which sort of seems like maybe a...prototype version? Sort of?

I also found Makiko Shinoda's "Materials Teddy", which...is slightly disturbing to look at, for me personally, but I like the concept behind it.

So, okay, fine, save for the one bear with "IAS" technology (*coughs*), no joy. I turned to TinEye Reverse Image Search, which works far more often than Google, to see what they could track down. All I had was that one screencap from the vid, but surprisingly, it actually turned up links.

Tons of links. Tons of...mostly non-relevant links.

Oh.

This page, for instance, seemed to be just images, no information. I did try to run additional searches--which tracked down everything from the 'Family in Disguise' series by Yu Jinyoung to a mecha-cybearg (according to the artist for this competition, Cakie) to Dark Roasted Blend's take on twisted toys (again with few attributions).

And nobody seems to know where this doll is from, either. (Possibly NSFW?? Though it is a baby doll, not an adult doll.)

So...I'm giving up. If anyone has any further information, or wishes to run down the disturbing toy themselves, have at, but I take no responsibility for strange dreams later.

Multitasking for me, these days, is watching something in one window while playing with graphics in another, or--like today--logging in to SL to check out the newness at Bare Rose while watching RWBY.

All pleas and mails which XMaeLynnX sent to the LindenLabs have been ignored.

And so after all this harassment and discussions XMaeLynnX resignates and doesn't want to keep on fighting.

XMaelynnX wants to ask you to _not_ buy any products from her marketplace anymore. LindenLabs did a freeze on all incomes for the last 3 months and it seems they plan to keep that money. They refuse to send it to her.

They acted the same with another avatar (Vera Mirror). They kept her money (30.000L$) for the reason that they want her personal rl information.

XMaeLynn doesn't want LindenLabs to keep earning money from her products on the marketplace. We'll keep on watching to see when LindenLabs turn that page in the marketplace off.

So this goes to all Members: Please DON'T buy anything at the Sarcastic Marketplace - it wouldn't be fair and XMaeLynnX wouldn't get anything out of it.

So...that DOES seem dire.

The main problem with this seems to be in the interaction between Linden Lab, a US-based company, and international accounts--for example, XMaeLynnX, who is German by birth and residency. And in Germany--as in much of the rest of Europe--giving out RL information online is actively prohibited by law. It's becoming an increasingly difficult clash of cultures, this one with direct financial consequences. I don't see any hope of resolution, either, unless LL decides to budge.

It's not that simple. Verifying with the Lab used to be a simple case of 'here's my credit card'; it's not anymore. In fact, one of the key difficulties is that the verification form online asks for a driver's licence number, or an EIN. If one does not live in the US, there may be no driver's licence number the form would recognize, and to apply for an EIN number for an international is a thorny path on its own; generally, that establishes residency, for a brick-and-mortar building, which SL is manifestly not.

• plus pay additional VAT fees on any sim they rent
• plus pay taxes in their native country
• and now pay US taxes in additional to their own taxes
• AND give personally identifying information to the Lab, an action with is banned by law in many European countries

Many internationals feel frustrated, angered, and trapped by these restrictions and rulings, and they're leaving in literal droves because of it.

And that's the heart and soul of what I wanted to post. We've seen spam "warnings" before--things that code manifestly can't do, or objects that ask for Linden access when they're attached (which is generally always an easy "no" and unattach to solve, but there are dim people on the grid). And I won't say that there are no malicious folks in SL.

But by and large, these "warnings" are almost always hoaxes, and cause more drama than they solve in any group they're posted. And this one particularly--this one message seems to be another that's taken the net by storm. I've gotten notices from groups, heard about this in chat, and with only one exception it's been "OMG PLZ THIS IS AWFUL THING". When in reality, it's just...nothing.

Well, and sometimes I do too. Today, for instance, I was very prim and proper, in a floor-length gown with long sleeves, hair in a precise bun, and fawn brocade boots, because I was hunting roses across Caledon. When I arrived back at the current crypt home, I exchanged that for a charcoal hoody, torn black jeans, studded platform boots, and a miniskirt.

I've openly despised the whole pouty fish-lips, wide-saddle form of female we seem stricken with currently, and I doubt that's going to change. But that's not because I think they look like prostitutes, or think the women in those shapes are inherently easy to sleep with. It's because I think that shape and style makes them look desperately unhappy, just a soul-deep, cynical misery that pervades outward from the skin. And I do not believe everyone who wears that shape or those specifically designed skins are that desperately unhappy, that riddled with hatred and bile. I think they're deliberately making themselves unattractive--to themselves if no one else--but my standards are not theirs, obviously, and that's pretty much the end of the assumption line.

So, Bandai Games is releasing a new Soul Calibur game for the Playstation console. Which I thought was grand news, until I heard that they'd hired Yamatogawa, an artist of hentai (erotic) manga to design new armor. And, well...it shows:

A few days ago, someone attempted RP in a freebie/gift group I'm in. It was unclear whether it was a wrong window, as the original author did not reply after the RP passage. There was some initial controversy (uncaptured, I crashed briefly), but this was the rest of the conversation afterwards:

Sure, we, ourselves, may not be playing a specific named character from something else, but I guarantee you, even if you had a programmed-from-your-RL-form-by-scientists-and-engineers mesh body, with a scan of your real face over it (and that actually has happened in SL, for certain corporate ventures), you would still be playing a character, because you behind the screen are not virtual. It took me a long time to actually grasp this; not that I wasn't "real" in SL, but that me playing me was just as much of a "character" as someone actually playing a character.

I admit, I do have an issue when I walk into a store and there are two Batmen, five Supermen and a Wonder Woman with inflatable breasts standing around...but that's mostly because I value originality, not conventionality.

(I have the same issue in Neverwinter, when I go back to Protector's Enclave and see ten elves named Legolas, or eight Drow named Drizz't...The whole Drizz't thing has become a complete joke, no one takes them seriously at this point because there are so, so many of them!

What's too seriously? There are many couples I know who met on SL, became close, and moved in with, or married, each other. (In fact, one of my RL loves, Miss Neome, started as an SL flirtation. She's been with us for five years now, and I look forward to many more to come.)

Not everyone can, and that's not a failing. I won't even say that some people lack imagination to do so, because that's not it. It takes a certain type of mentality to invent a character and roll with what that character would do. Authors, artists, even makers of toys and players of games, all of these contribute to characters to drive their creativity forward, but there are others who are perfectly happy simply being themselves, without the need to play 'what if'. And that's fine.

And that's part of the problem--the fixed position of the camera for so many years predisposed folks in SL to be taller than they really needed to be. And being taller, they needed taller doors, taller homes, taller everything.

Well, it does and it doesn't. The original camera mapping predisposed folks to be taller; which affected buildings and other structures. But LL by and large didn't build their world; the residents did. The residents made the choices to be taller than perhaps necessary, which created a culture of height in SL for all the years thereafter.

There's that too, which is actually an excellent point. The standard 'intro' land, in many places, is still 512. 512 feels very small if one lives ten feet tall with twelve-foot-high entryways and fifteen-foot-tall rooms. But, if we're building to a five-to-six-foot avatar height, you'd only need, max, six-foot entryways, which would lead to eight- to ten-foot ceilings. Smaller buildings; smaller scales for objects; more land.

For those on the grid who prefer a less youthful appearance, it can be difficult to find appropriate holiday attire. DarkDharma aims to fix that, at least partially, with a complete Mrs. Claus avatar. It retails for L$795, which sounds a tad steep, but it includes: the full mesh avatar for Mrs. Claus the full outfit, including sculpted boots mesh hair and mobcap capelet and glasses the alpha layer to make everything work and a detailed, sculpted cookie tray which can be clicked to offer cookies to guests or wandering friends I won't say it's a steal at that price, but considering everything that's included, it's a reasonable deal.

The above is in a box, because I wrote it--obviously--in December of 2014. How'ver, I recently checked and yes, the avatar is still available on the Marketplace for that price. So my question now is, can it be used for other things? Like, can you dress the base Mrs. Claus avatar up in other mesh clothing? If so, that might well be a good look for the seeking-wrinkles set.

So, definition of terms for those who may not know.

• CW: Control Wizard--your basic spellcasters. They generally have two basic elemental fields, which break down to fire and ice (though there's some earth-shaking at higher levels, some growing of things now and again, and bursts of lightning throughout).
• TR: Trickster Rogue, the sneak-thiefs, the shadow assassins, the ones who can seemingly disappear in broad daylight.
• HR: Hunter Ranger. Think incredibly skilled archers who can also hide in plain sight if they want. They can also summon pretty powerful personal buffs to help them heal themselves or others, or increase their damage or their resistance to attack.
• GWF: Great Weapon Fighter. AKA, the guys with the pointiest armor and the most oversized swords.
• DC: Devoted Cleric, basically the healers.
• GF: Guardian Fighter, since it comes up later in this conversation. They're like Great Weapon Fighters, except they fight with sword and shield, and their main job is to debuff the bad guys and strengthen the good guys.

There's one more class--the Scourge Warlock--and one coming in Module Six--the Paladin. But they're not of main import to this captured bit of chat.

Actually, no. The Masquerade dyes, sold during October, dye in orange and black/deep brown hues. Lliira's festival dye does shades of gold, red and blue.

There are so many entries I've saved to work on, so many things I want to talk about, but...there's something more important.

From Mr. Icterus Dagger:

As I am so disconnected with SL these days, and Caledon even moreso, I didn't know who else to contact. Miss Soliel Snook (a.k.a. Janet Wright) passed away early this morning, at home, after fighting cancer for the past year. Here is her daughter Happi's post (in part) from Facebook this morning:

"It's with a broken heart that I have to report that my mum, Janet Wright, passed away at 2:20am this morning. She died with both Bruce and I at either side; make further more comfortable from her meds supplied by the incredible team at Suncoast Hospice. However, it was so fast and started right after the night nurse had finished her checks and left. I immediately called Bruce as she asked; so it was just she, Bruce & I. Followed by a very protective Teddy steadfastly glued to her lap and who is, as most of you know, her beloved dog. Her cat Milo also sang her specifically a "song" of his people (as he often does at 3am) right after she left us..."

No funeral is planned, as far as I know, but Janet wanted a simple cremation and a "Quaker Irish" wake at the St. Petersburg, FL Quaker meetinghouse. Details, as you can imagine, are "TBD."

Janet was undergoing experimental treatment for an aggressive cancer (as chemo and other "traditional" methods were not successful). Although we all (her friends) knew her prognosis was very poor, everything happened so quickly this week.

Miss Snook was such an important part of the life and culture of Caledon and related lands, as well as serving up music and fun with Radio Riel. Please pass along this information to Caledon and such, if you please.

And this from Duchess Gabrielle Riel:

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Radio Riel Presenter, current St John resident and former Caledon resident Soliel Snook passed away last night. I (Gabrielle Riel) am planning to hold a multi-hour-time-zone memorial service for her on May 12. Details to come. I need time to work though my grief, thus the memorial being scheduled a few weeks out. Soliel was one of my dearest friends in both lives. Things will never be the same without her.

Another shining light departs from Caledon, and while I wasn't as close as many of her stronger friends, I remember her with great fondness, and accept this news with great sorrow. My deepest sympathies go to her close friends and her family in their time of grief.

So, this one's going to be quick, sadly. I had a larger entry planned--and may even get to it!--but Ms. Nyree Rain notified me today that I had mucked up on the permissions for my items. Eep! So I spent several hours (between RL concerns) repackaging, setting permisisions, setting the default perms for my viewer, and checking everything at each stage to make sure they were going to hold.

Next up: tracking down everyone who's bought a set of horns already, and sending them a pair with the right perms! Ack!
